Ear wax is a yellowish waxy substance produced inside the ear canal. In small to moderate amounts it actually is beneficial to us. It offers protection to the skin of the ear canal, assists with cleaning and lubrication and also gives us protection from harmful bacteria, fungus, insects and water. When too much wax is produced however, or when the wax presses against the eardrum, it can impair hearing and cause other symptoms.
Ear wax is made in the outer third of the ear canal by sebaceous glands and modified sweat glands. There appears to be 2 distinct types of ear wax. The wet type that is commonly found in Native Americans and Asians and a dry type that is gray and flaky and most commonly found in Caucasians and Africans.
When ear wax causes decreased hearing it can be removed in many ways. Softening the wax with hydrogen peroxide is often followed by a gentle vaccuming of the wax. In our practice we have found that this gentle vaccuming is the method favored by our patients so is used most often. Other methods include utilizing a gentle water flush or grabing the wax and dislodging with a special instrument known as a aligator forceps.
